Artwork Verses Digital Files: the Pros and Cons.
Prints vs. Digital Files in Dog Photography: What’s the Difference and Why It Matters
If you've recently had a professional session with your dog—or you're thinking about it—you’ll likely face a decision:
Should you purchase artwork, digital files, or both?
As someone who's spent a lifetime with dogs and years behind the camera, I get this question often. And it’s an important one. Let's break down the difference between digital files and professionally printed artwork, and why it matters for the memories you want to preserve.
What Are Digital Files?
Digital files are high-resolution images—edited and ready to view, share, or print. They’re perfect for:
Sharing on social media
Using as wallpaper on your phone or desktop
Archiving for safekeeping
When you purchase digital files from me, you’re receiving fully edited images in their highest quality. You can print them yourself—but not all labs are created equal. The quality, color, and longevity of the print depends heavily on where and how it’s produced. My digital files, however, are the backbone of my business and are priced accordingly, so you are better served buying artwork. Digital files are not offered on my regular price list for this reason.
And let’s be honest: most of the time, digital files end up tucked away on a hard drive, rarely looked at again.
What Is Artwork?
Artwork is something entirely different.
When I say “artwork,” I’m talking about professionally printed, tangible pieces—whether that’s a stretched canvas, a fine art print, or a custom-framed portrait designed to suit your home.
These are not quick prints from a chain store. They’re heirlooms, crafted to preserve your dog’s spirit for years to come. Each piece is:
Printed through professional labs I trust
Calibrated for accurate color and longevity
Delivered ready to display—no stress, no extra steps
You’re not just buying a photo. You’re investing in something that tells a story—and makes you smile every time you walk past it
Why I Recommend Prints
When I look at the portraits of Whitney, Axe, or Kyra hanging in my home, I don’t just see their faces—I feel their presence.
That’s what printed artwork does. It keeps their stories alive, right where you can see and feel them.
Digital files are useful, absolutely. But they’re not the same as having your dog’s expression captured forever in a piece of wall art or a keepsake box of prints you can hold.
Want the Best of Both Worlds?
You don’t have to choose just one.
Most of my clients select a mix: they order a few standout pieces of artwork and receive matching digital files. That way they can enjoy their dog’s portraits every day at home—and still share the joy with friends and family online.
If you're not sure what’s right for you, I’m always happy to help walk you through the options. We’ll find a solution that feels right for your style, space, and story.
Let’s make your dog’s legacy something you can hold in your hands—and your heart.
